He earned his Ph.D. degree in Management Sciences and Logistics from Ohio State University. His expertise includes global logistics strategy, healthcare supply chains, closed-loop supply chains, e-synchronized supply chains, service benchmarking, and supply chain modeling. He has published more than 170 scholarly articles in various refereed journals including European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, Journal of the Operational Research Society, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Production Economics, Transportation Journal, and Transportation Research. There is no Great Wall of China, argues Lovell, who teaches Chinese history at Cambridge University. Instead, there are many Great Walls—physical, mental, cultural, military and economic—separating China from the outside world. The 4,300-mile-long wall is far more complex than any of the thousands of tourists taking a photo along its famous battlements realizes. Indeed, to the Chinese themselves, their wall has variously signified repression, freedom, security, vulnerability, cultural superiority, economic backwardness, imperial greatness and national humiliation. Still, myths about it abound. Far from it being unbreachable, Chinese emperors relied on the wall only as a last resort to fend off their enemies. (The Ming dynasty, for instance, found it useless against the victorious Manchus, who merely bribed the gatekeepers to let them in.) "As a strategy that has survived for more than two millennia," Lovell writes, "China's frontier wall is a monumental metaphor for reading China and its history, for defining a culture and a worldview...." Lovell tells the gripping, colorful story of the wall up to the present day, including a perceptive discussion of the "Great Firewall"—the Internet, which has replaced nomadic raiders as the most threatening of China's attackers. Since it is a required text(in the college piano classes),and because of that way overpriced, I think at the very least publishers could have chosen a better quality covers - they are thin and perforated edges(where rings are inserted) start ripping apart after a about a month of daily usage. I had to make my own covers from thick carboard and glue original ones on top. As far as book content goes, I think it is pretty good - nicely layed out topics, beautiful pieces to play. The only flaw would be(as our teacher pointed out), that it doesn't include many pieces for the very beginning - she had to give her own handouts for those. CD could be better - you get idea for the notes played, but pieces are played very dry - no musicality at all. And with some other instruments in the background which are disturbing to hear the piano part.Update: I went to Kinkos and had custom covers made out of thick plastic sheets(they just had black color)- it cost just 10 dollars for two books - I should have had them made right away, this way real covers would have been nice and safe inside.

Glad I purchased this book instead of renting. We do a lot of the worksheets inside and it is so much easier to write in the book itself. Also its the same book I need for my Piano 2 class next semester so its a win win situation one book for two classes lol

This textbook is huge as well, however this textbook was required by my music professor and I'm glad that I got book cheaper than the bookstore at my campus. I like the binding of the platic comb. It seems like this book can last me a life time, if I take good care of it. Nice book with assignments, theory, techniques, and more. The book is true to its colors.

Piano teacher requested this book for class and I learned a lot. After class was over I try to finish lessons we didn't cover. but you need a teacher to explain it!It is very difficult to understand when learning on your own, specially when you are a beginner.

This book was used for my Piano Techniques class. It's a great book to study piano for beginners. I started with little to no experience on the piano and using this book has helped me grow. I can't say that it was just the book, but my instructor helped too. That doesn't mean that someone can just buy this book and still be as successful as me without an instructor. It comes with a CD to play examples. It's a great book!!!

I love this book! I had played piano for 2 years as a boy, but I had dropped it to play the viola. So when I heard I would have to take piano as a course in College, I almost died. A group piano class? Really? But, then when I got this book, I realized that this is no normal 1+1=2 textbook. This takes you step by step and leads you very calmly into learning how to coordinate your two hands. My professor loves this book because she calls it her companion book, and I can say the same thing!Great purchase! If you're buying for a college class, buy it, don't rent it! This textbook can be used for several years in college.

Donald Treadwell earned his master’s degree in communication from Cornell University and his PhD in communication and rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

            He developed and taught communication research classes in classroom and online settings as well as teaching courses in organizational communication, public relations and public relations writing.

            He has published and presented research on organizational image, consumer response to college names, health professionals’ images of AIDS, faculty perceptions of the communication discipline, and employers’ expectations of newly-hired communication graduates. His research appears in Communication Monographs, Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, Public Relations Review, Journal of Human Subjectivity, and Criminal Justice Ethics.

            He is professor emeritus, Westfield State University, and has international consulting experience in agricultural extension and health communication.

 

Jill Treadwell has 30 years experience in publications and public relations.  She has managed PR campaigns for the US and international companies as well as for non-profit and educational organizations.  She has a background in both writing and design and has specialized in annual reports, newsletters, brochures, and proposals directed at state and federal procurement agencies.

In addition to maintaining a private public relations consulting practice, she currently teaches public relations, public relations writing and other writing courses in both classroom and online settings at Westfield State College.

Mr. Moorehead had a knack for writing very readable books about intriguing subjects. This book fits the description, but has problems. The author chooses to look at the the impact of Western countries on Tahiti, Australia and Antarctica The problem is that they are so different: the great frozen continent has no people and the native people of Australia were quite unlike the islanders of South Sea islands. Indeed, while there was a tragic inevitability about the changes in Tahiti, there was real malice in the destruction of the Australian natives. The author has produced a series of interesting vignettes rather than a focused book.

This 1966 book coined a term that still is used to describe disastrous impacts of more powerful cultures on weaker ones. Moorehead describes the effects of initial European contacts with Tahiti, Australia, and the Antarctic, giving special attention to the voyages of Captain Cook. Early British contacts with the Tahitians are described in fascinating detail. Cook perceived that Western impact on Tahiti would have serious negative effects, writing that it would have been better for the Tahitians if the British had never visited the island. In his description of the initial British colonization of Australia, Moorehead focuses on the mistreatment of the aborigines, including the complete elimination of native Tasmanians from their homeland. Most of the section on the Antarctic is about Cook's determined attempts to reach the continent with his ships. Cook's descriptions of abundant sea life around Antarctica had the unintended effect of provoking whalers and sealers to decimate many species. Well written, this book is a chastening read.

One of my favorite books, read it in my early 20's...reading again in my late 60's...enjoyed and learned from it both times.

An absolute classic. No praise can do justice. Suffice to say, if you're here, you'll buy this book. It's just sad that so few people have even heard of anything written by Alan Moorehead apart from the two books on the White and Blue Nile.

When I wanted to know about the discovery of the Nile, I read White Nile and Blue Nile. Now I know about the invasion of the South Pacific.

This Alan Moorehead book discusses the effects of the penetration of European powers into the South Pacific. Rather than write a massive tome he has gone the path of viewing this in large part by looking at the voyages of exploration by Captain Cook and the sort of results his journeys had. Further it is largely pared down to the discussing the localities of Tahiti, Australia and Antarctica.Effectively the work is therefore broken up into three parts as the author discusses the effects of the opening up of these areas. Of course this somewhat overlooks the fact that - at least in the case of Tahiti - it was already on the map and had been visited by earlier vessels than those of Captain Cook. Despite this - and partly because of it - the segment of the work on Tahiti is perhaps the most interesting as it is not an account of first contact, but certainly quite early contact. The changes had perhaps already started though were quite nascent. And the work explores the overall effect of contact with the European world on Tahitian people, culture and modes of living. It is also interesting to see how different Europeans reacted when placed in a very different situation. The tale is told in a lucid, deftly balanced manner and with an air of resigned inevitability. Perhaps strangely, if you have an interest in one day visiting this part of the world your desire is unlikely to be dampened by the reading of this work.The second segment deals with the discoveries by Cook of the Australian east coast and the way this made it possible for the British to colonise the place, dislodging the previous inhabitants by the musket. Again, the tale is told in a gently resigned manner. Certainly it is told without the overdone hand-wringing that would be expected - nay required - of later authors. Those wanting to learn more about these early years of British penetration into the continent of Australia will find plenty of starting points both in the text and the bibliography which is quite useful.Lastly we have a section of the work dealing with the commercial interests that moved into the Antarctic area once it had become more firmly mapped. The slaughter enjoined by the sealers and whalers was truly fantastic in terms of the sheer numbers of animals taken. It is mind-boggling to read some of the stories of just how plentiful such animals were and how quickly there were able have their populations denuded.The three sections of this book stand alone of course but do intertwine via the Captain Cook aspect linking them. Which is presumably why Moorehead chose to write the book like this. It has a small section of black and white photographs and of course the aforementioned bibliography is a useful addition to the book. Overall very interesting though perhaps more as a easily read introduction to broader and larger topics.
