Modeling Engineering Systems goes right to the heart of engineering, teaching you how to:understand and use the three basic types of engineering building blocksrecognize the analogies that can be drawn between the fundamental elements of electrical, mechanical, fluid, and thermal systemsdevelop math models for first- and higher-order systems using four fundamental methodsanalyze the models you developperform frequency analysis and plot frequency responsesEducated at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and MIT, Jack W. Lewis is a registered professional engineer, his specialty is the design of automatic control and instrumental systems, especially as related to the marine industry. He is the author of numerous technical papers and articles, including national award-winning papers for the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME).

Review "...an easy to read book that makes a difficult subject damn near easy!" --73 Magazine
From the Author This book is now available available for the Kindle ebook reader. The Kindle version has been revised, updated and expanded. The book describes how to construct and analyze dynamic mathematical models of engineering systems. Constructing such models involves the development of time-varying differential equations. Specifically, the development and analysis of lumped parameter, linear ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients. Such equations are often used to describe the dynamic behavior of engineering systems found in studies of feedback controllers, vibrations, and many other engineering systems. You will learn how to develop these equations and how to solve them numerically and analytically. I take a very basic approach in my explanations. That is, I start with basic physics and develop elemental describing equations of three fundamental building blocks contained in almost all engineering systems. You will discover that electrical, mechanical, fluid and thermal systems all look alike mathematically. This is important because math model construction and analysis techniques developed in one field of engineering (like electrical engineering) can then be used in other engineering fields such as mechanical, fluid and thermal. It's also important because many engineering systems involve electrical, mechanical, fluid and thermal dynamics. Using case studies, I show how to develop and use these math models in such multidisciplinary practical applications. Unlike many text books on this subject, I explain each step in details in order to make the material simple and easy to understand. Past customers reviews appear to indicate that my teaching methods work. I assume at the start that you have a fairly good grounding in algebra and trigonometry. A course in calculus would be useful, but f you have not had a course or if you calculus is "rusty", I provide a review of calculus fundamentals in Appendix A. It is not necessary to have had a course in differential equations. I provide a solid course in applied ordinary differential equations as you work through the book.I also have a website to support this book and other forthcoming titles in the field of automatic feedback control systems.
From the Back Cover Math modeling demystified!Learn all the fundamental tools needed to model and analyze any engineering system−electrical, mechanical, fluid, or thermal. This friendly and practical guide teaches "unified" engineering techniques, showing you how the same basic set of ordinary differential equations can be used to describe almost any type of system. Using simple PC spreadsheet simulations and BASIC programs−and over 300 illustrations and tables−Jack Lewis guides you from the simplest design elements up through second- and higher-order complex systems. The mathematics is explained in a straightforward way and illustrated through real-world case studies and design examples.A gentle introduction automatic control systems lays a thorough groundwork for more advanced math modeling and design work.Whether you are an engineering student or a practicing professional changing fields or looking for a brush-up, this timeless book belongs on your reference shelf!
