I have been trying to write a review for this book for 2 days now and I don’t know where to start. I would like to start off by saying don’t believe the hype of this book. I bought this book because I saw so many teachers reading it. I heard such great things and it got me interested. The book was redundant. Spoiler alert: Wade plays the drums in his class like it’s School of Rock and Hope loves room transformations. That’s it. That’s the book. No, this isn’t the Joker talking and I’m not jealous. I don’t know what I was expecting from this book, but I’m severely disappointed. The topics in this book are obvious. This was no how-to book. It’s a book that just talks about the same things. We get it, transform your room and have no excuses, BUT WAIT don’t do it too often because it loses its magic. If I could give zero stars, I would. Teachers, this book won’t change your life or student’s lives. If you’re even considering getting this book, don’t. I regret spending my money on this.

The Wild Card is truly AMAZING! This book is a must-read for all beginning teachers, seasoned teachers, and administrators. It reminds us all as to why we chose this profession and encourages us to stay on track with our "WHY." I found myself numerous times saying "YES!" out loud, annotating "YES!" in the margins and nodding my head in agreement. This book brought many emotions as I read Hope's and Wade's experiences, as it reflected many feelings that I have felt and experienced personally. While reading, I had numerous people come to mind and knew immediately that The Wild Card would impact their lives, as much as it touched mine. I had to quickly purchase several copies for my secret pal, my mentee, birthday gifts, etc. The Wild Card will be on my gift list for educators in the future, as well. There are countless educational books out there, but never before have I felt such a connection. I'm grateful that Hope and Wade provided insight to let us know that we are not alone, with our experiences and thoughts, as educators. Their encouragement is contagious~ what an inspiration!

I’m reading this book as a school-based speech-language pathologist (SLP), and I’m absolutely loving it. Something about the way Hope and Wade write, it just... speaks to me! Since I don’t have a ton in common with them (different job title, for starters), I’m guessing this book will speak to you, too. I have followed Hope and Wade King for several years on social media. I was lucky enough to see them teach and hear them present at their school, The Ron Clark Academy. They are dynamic and inspiring educators that share what they do with all who want to learn. I knew when I began reading this book that it would be just as inspirational as they were while presenting (and I was right). I loved reading their 7 step process on how to become the engaging and creative teacher you always wanted to be. It is an excellent guide for new and experienced educators alike.

Hope & Wade King are encouraging, empowering, and inspiring to me as a fellow teacher. I am so appreciative of how they break down practical steps for me to accept and embrace my own creative style. I wanted to become a teacher because I loved all subjects (i.e. art, music, science, math, etc.), and so I wanted share my love for learning with my students, but for a while I felt like I wasn't tapping into any of that. My passion, creativity, and joy decreased rapidly along the way; I felt like I was dealt with such tough hands/cards for many years. Hope & Wade helped reset my mindset, and I needed their very real examples and experiences to show me that I, too, can be a rock star teacher like them, no matter what comes my way. The best part is that it will be in my own unique way. This book will be my go-to resource this summer; I look forward to diving into each chapter again, slower and deeper, as I reflect on my craft before another school year.

I very uplifting read from some very creative authors. The book is basically a narrative of how the authors become creative teachers, while overcoming obstacles along the way. Their goal is to convince you that every teacher can be creative. In my opinion, the book relates better to elementary grades and lower. Although the book suggests buying from thrift stores and asking for donations, budget cost will likely be an issue for many teachers if you adopt their methods. There are some practical suggestions at the end of the book.

One of us recently visited a first-grade  classroom when a young boy approached and said, Hey you teacher, you wanna watch me read?  His room was filled with  print. There was a fantastic classroom library with hundreds of storybooks and expository text and a  well-equipped writing center complete with  computers with software and a kid-friendly word processing package.  Most important of all, there was an enthusiastic teacher who was talking about an engaging story they would study through the week.   We had observed this teacher many times before as she skillfully blended phonics skills, vocabulary and comprehension all while sharing her love of reading wonderful stories with her students.   Yes, indeed this young boy was going to be a successful reader.

 

One of the greatest challenges we face today is also including and sharing information about reading and writing with families. To help with this challenge we have included practical ideas for building parent-teacher partnerships.   Likewise we included dozens of ideas about collecting information about children’s constantly developing skills and how this assessment data can guide teachers’ daily instruction.  We have also added new features on adapting instruction to meet the needs of English language learners and children with special needs.

 

Teaching young children learn how to read and then helping maturing students use reading to extend their learning is the purpose of this text.   We use the research to guide our text and grounding it in real teachers’ daily practice.

About the Author

James Christie is a Professor of Advanced Studies in Education Policy, Leadership, and Curriculum at Arizona State University where he teaches courses in early childhood education.  His research interests include early literacy development and children's play. He has served as co-director of several Early Reading First projects.

 

Billie Enz is a professor of early childhood education in the College of Teacher Education and Leadership at Arizona State University where she teaches courses in early childhood education. Her research includes language and literacy development and family literacy.  She is a co-principle investigator for First Things First External Evaluation for Arizona which is a state-wide early childhood initiative.

 

Carol Vukelich is the Hammonds Professor in Teacher Education and Director of the Delaware Center of Teacher Education at the University of Delaware where she co-directs two Early Reading First projects and supports colleagues’ work on several other projects.  Her research interests include early literacy development, particularly children’s vocabulary development, and teaching writing.
